| There have been hundreds of thousands of political prisoners since Fidel Castro took power in 1959. Thousands have been executed without a due process of law; I have heard over three hundred executions by the firing squads while in la Cabaņa prison from 1963 to 1976. The prisoners were taken to trial at about 2pm and those sentenced to death were executed that same night after 9 pm and sometimes earlier. I have seen them walk with their heads high after receiving the sentence and many shouted Viva Cuba Libre, Viva Cristo Rey (Hail Free Cuba, Hail Christ the King) before they were silenced by the firing squad. Those who dared to oppose the Communist regime, and there have been many, received all kinds of tortures including physical beatings and sometimes even death at the hands of the prison guards who were following orders from their superiors. I spent many years in prison together with many others. I was abducted from a British Territory (Elbow Key in the Bahamas), but the Cuban dictator denied it as usual. I was kept in prison without a trial from Feb. 1963 until Sept. 1970 and I was sentenced to 30 years in prison in a trial that lasted less than one hour. There have been no changes in Raul Castro time in power. The opposition is mistreated, their rights are violated constantly and they are harassed by the political police and many have been imprisoned for expressing their opinions. We need to fight for our freedom, for Democracy and to keep jails free from innocents. This is an opportunity to express our desires, not only in Cuba, but throughout the entire Democratic World: Freedom for the Cuban people! Viva Cuba Libre! Eleno O. Oviedo |
